The International Alliance of Waste Pickers (IAWP) has released its Executive Council report, covering major milestones from May to October 2024. Key highlights include the first-ever Elective Congress held in Buenos Aires, where democratically elected global leadership was established, and eight historic resolutions were adopted to guide the Alliance’s priorities — from social protection and gender rights to just transition and EPR.
The report also details IAWP’s growing influence in global policy spaces, including active participation in the UN Plastics Treaty negotiations, engagement at the International Labour Conference, and visibility during New York Climate Week. Significant regional advances were made in Latin America, Asia, and Africa, with the formation of national waste picker movements and stronger alliances.
This period marks a transformative chapter for IAWP as it strengthens its governance, deepens international advocacy, and expands support for waste pickers in over 34 countries.
